Chapters 7-12

The book just keeps getting better and better.
In this part of the book Opal is making more friends and trying to get a job at a pet store. At the pet store there is a bird named Gertrude. I love this bird. For Opal to get the job the bird has to like Winn Dixie and of course she does. When Winn Dixie goes in the store the birds yells "dog!" and lands on Winn Dixie's head, and Opal is able to work at the pet store so she can pay for the leash she wants for Winn Dixie. This chapter ends with Opal getting invited to a birthday party for a six-year, but she doesn't care about the age, she is glad that she had made another friend.

Also in this section of the book, we learn of Winn Dixie's fear of thunderstorms. One night there is a storm and Winn Dixie goes crazy. This reminded me of one of my childhood pets, I had a cat who would go running through the house and practically do back flips when it stormed.

In chapter 12 Opal goes to work for her first day and sees Otis playing music for all the animals in the store. The animals are out of all their cages and listening to the music, but once he stops the animals go crazy, the only thing that keeps them calm his is playing.

My dog hides under my bed when it storms. Winn Dixie is such a wonderful dog. To find out that he's pathological about the storms is rather shocking and makes you wonder what he's experienced in his life.

I'm glad you had a connection to your book. My younger brother will not go anywhere if he sees that it's going to rain. We got caught in a hail storm on our move from Chicago and he's been traumatized ever since.
